Card Info

Title: Lakitu
Cost:

2 coins

Quantity:

x2

Play:

Play after an opponent uses a card.

Description:

Take that card off the top of the discard pile. If you play it before the start of that opponent's next turn, you do not have to pay the card's cost.

Notes

Is Lakitu a good guy or a bad guy? One minute he’s throwing Spinies at Mario, and the next he’s filming him and fishing his go-kart out of icy waters. Lakitu is a favorite card in War of the Fanboys. He can use his trusty fishing pole to cull up the best cards from the discard pile. Is this WotF or Go Fish? Lakitu is sure to be handy, so long as the player can maintain a fisherman’s patience, waiting for just the right catch to come along.

The first card shows Lakitu from Nintendo’s Mario Kart 64, which set the standard for the racer series. When Lakitu wasn’t fishing for erratic drivers, he was keeping track of the laps and directing players that might be lost. The second screenshot is from Super Mario World, where Lakitu dangles a 1-up Mushroom for Mario. In both these instances, Lakitu is being helpful, which is why they were chosen for the Lakitu card, which is particularly helpful in WotF.

Clarifications

Lakitu vs Kabula: Can I use Lakitu on Bullet Bill, even if another player uses Kabula to intercept it?

When Bullet Bill is played, Kabula always takes priority over Lakitu. Lakitu may still be used, but Kabula would be the top card on the discard pile at this point.

Lakitu vs Lakitu: What if both an opponent and I want to Lakitu the same card?

If two players want to use Lakitu on a card that was played by a third person, both players must roll a 6-sided die, rerolling all ties. Whichever player rolls higher may use Lakitu. The player that rolls lower keeps Lakitu in their hand and may not use it until another card is played.

Previous Versions

Lakitu is the best! Wait, why is Shy Guy here? Okay, there was a mix up. They do look alike. But really, I thought it was Shy Guy who fished players out in Mario Kart. My mistake.
