Card Info

Title: Evade
Cost:

1 coin

Quantity:

x1

Play:

Play when an opponent declares an invasion into your land territory.

Description:

For the rest of your opponent's attack phase, you may negate one 8 rolled during any invasion into your land territories.

Notes

Hitmonchan, like any good boxer, can bob and weave, dodging haymaker punches and knockout blows. Evade isnt named after a move that a Pokemon can use, but a stat that it has. When your Fanboys train with Hitmonchan, they work on their speed and stamina, and they ultimately learn to sidestep powerful attacks, so that the opponent, like a charging bull, gallops past the defender and right out of the fight.

Evade features the artwork from the reverse holographic Best of Game promotional card released by Wizards of the Coast. Because Hitmonchan is a defensive card, art showing Hitmonchan throwing punches was not considered. This art was by Ken Sugimori.

Clarifications

Does Evade negate an attackers bonus die?

No. Evade can only negate an 8 that is rolled, and only a single 8 in an invasion. If an opponent has two attack dice, and rolls a 4 and an 8, the outcome of the battle is calculated as if the 8 was never rolled. For instance, if the defender rolls a 3 and a 5, because there is no 8 to beat the 5, the 5 beats the 4, and the attacker loses a unit. The defender loses nothing. If the attacker rolls a 4 and a 7, 7 beats the 5 and 4 beats the 3, so the defender loses two units, while the attacker takes no losses.

Previous Versions

Breaking the canon of Pokemon, Hitmonchan has evolved. In earlier versions of War of the Fanboys, Evade was played in response to a single invasion, granting one extra defensive die. This wasnt all that useful, as if the extra defense die landed poorly, it would actually cost the defender an extra Fanboy. Even when played successfully, Evade could possibly make a difference 3 Fanboys, but then, there were the max dice rules to consider. Any territory worth defending is going to have more than one defending Fanboy, so playing this card would have given the defender 3 defense dice, which is not allowed. And any territory that only has a single Fanboy on it is probably lost, anyway. So there were quite a few reasons why this card needed to change, and come to think of it, having extra defense isnt an evasive maneuver at all.
