Zebes

Current Version: 3.2

Planet Zebes from the Metroid series is an alien planet that provides additional territories for fanboys to quarrel over. Zebes is divided into three regions, each of which can provide bonus reinforcements to assist in the battles taking place on the main board or to strengthen the grip on Zebes, itself. Zebes can only be invaded from territories with Castles, which presumably have launch pads that fanboys can use to launch their rockets into space. When a player invades Zebes from a territory with a Castle, that player can only invade one of the three territories with a landing beacon icon: Wrecked Ship, Samus Aran’s Ship, and Chozodia.

Once on Zebes, fanboys can attack adjacent Zebes territories. However, one of the main features of Zebes is the river of lava than nearly circles the planet. Fanboys and Heroes cannot cross the lava to attack territories on the other side. This creates a bottleneck at the center of the planet, where the three regions meet. If a player wishes to invade territories on the main board from Zebes territories, they must have one of the specific Hero cards that allows this.

Fanboys and Heroes on Zebes may redistribute back to the main board as long as they have a path to one of the three Zebes territories with landing beacons and a land territory with a Castle. This creates a safe “chain” of territories back to the main board.

3.1

Zebes 3.1 was slightly smaller than 3.2 to allow for the orbiting docking stations. The docking stations are visible on some of the earliest photos of the game that were released. The art style matched really well and I liked them a lot better than the landing beacons, but the problem was that they were original art I found Google searching satellite images. I don’t want to distribute something against the will of its author, so I’ve respectfully removed the offending images. If anyone’s curious, the landing beacons are the elevators from Metroid – Zero Mission. As for the starry background, that’s a NASA image of the Milky Way. Thankfully for this project, NASA images are public domain.

3.0

The Zebes board was originally horizontal, which made the territories way too small to use, thanks to the Zebes logo at the bottom. The original printout also included the docking stations, but they have been removed again.

2.0/1.0

The original Zebes is very similar in layout to the current Zebes, despite the wacky borders being smoothed out some. Zebes 2.0 and 3.2 would have been identical in play if only Wrecked Ship and Phantoon’s Hunting Grounds were adjacent in 3.2. Much consideration went into grouping the current territories, keeping them as consistent with the games as possible (and other aesthetics, such as putting the jungle level in the green region and the water level in the blue region,) but in the first Zebes, territories were sprinkled in at random.

As for the version number, I honestly can’t remember if this is the original board, or if it was lost with the rest of WotF 1.0. I have a strong feeling that this is the original, as we kept the auxiliary boards in a box with the Hero Cards, which survived, but I cannot confirm.

...Yes, I noticed the biased slant against Rush. I guess a liberal rag can't stand the thought that he's hap__.y_____p__If there is one thing they hate more than a happy conservative, it is a happy conservative with a beautiful woman.
